Fawlty Towers Page 14

Yes I do and those people have got Mrs Browns Boys.

So serves them right

Noobs!

Laughing out loud Harsh.

In the words of Oscar Wilde, there is only one thing worse than being spoken about behind one's back. And that is Mrs Brown's Boys.

Fawlty Towers apparently is going to be broadcasted without the racism.

"Don't worry, he's from Bradford."

"They're Scottish, don't mention the referendum."

Maybe they meant without selected racism?

BritBox has it completely unedited, but with a sort of trigger warning at the beginning of that episode explaining the socio-historic (?) context. Like Disney+ have done.

I don't agree with censoring, I'd much rather a warning was given. That said it's been edited for television for years as have lots of sitcoms with bad language so I don't know why people are getting so outraged now. Also hasn't Cleese said in the past he agrees with the edit?

Ah, but did they keep the scene in "Gourmet Night" when the drunk chef threw up over the meal Fawlty was asking him about? I remember that scene was deleted way back when the BBC repeated the series for the first time. Never seen it since.

The scene is there, but the actual moment he throws up is cut - you just sort of have to assume that's what happened. I don't think I've ever seen it any other way; I thought maybe that was the original but with really clunky editing. BritBox is owned by the BBC, so they probably used their own broadcast version.

Well, I have a weak stomach so remember that scene well, and the chef actor had a mouth of "sick", which he heaved over the plated meal. Sick

It was probably cut before I was born, if I'm honest. Too gross for broadcast... I too have a low tolerance for bodily fluids, so I don't have a problem with that.

I thought he attacked the decision to edit it, so I'm not sure. I think warnings are absolutely fine - they do it on Radio 4Extra all the time. Most streaming sites have them as well, but they're in the top left corner and if you blink you'll miss them. I want to know what's happened to trigger warnings on linear radio and TV, though - many a time I've practically thrown a device across the room because there's some unsolicited animal cruelty, a gratuitous rape scene, or some casual suicide. While we might be dealing with race and gender more sensitively, it seems to be a free-for-all for trauma. Especially during 2020 - the whole year was wall-to-wall misery porn. That's a different issue, though.

I agree. A lot of people rage and get into a right old splother about them, but I think if they enable us to carry on watching a programme that has some bits that could offend, then they're fine. There's plenty of things I've seen, usually involving animal cruelty, that I wish I'd known about in advance (I'm looking at you, Apocalypse Now, and your 'water buffalo getting it's head cut off' scene).

I always thought that was mocked up

I'm not so sure - things got pretty crazy on that shoot.

I have the Spanish DVD set and I can't work out whether the vomit scene is cut or not.
This whole censorship thing is getting beyond ridiculous. How can you possibly go through every second of every show and vet what might be offensive to some bored, humourless dingbat in Stoke with f**k all to do? The whole point of DVD sets is you get the proverbial warts 'n' all, plus there's this great new feature called Fast Forward. (What will they think of next?) Personally I always jump the Hell scene in The Young Ones 1.3 but I seem to be alone in that.

That's one for me to avoid - thanks! Doesthedogdie.com is a good resource for such things, by the way. I just think it's lazy, clumsy writing - if you're too chicken to kill off a human character for some emotional gravitas, don't take it out on the bloody animals. I really respect Ricky Gervais for that reason, I have to say. There are episodes of Peep Show and Friday Night Dinner I'm actually banned from watching by my friends. If I'm offended by something, I'll get over it, but kill an animal fictional or otherwise... Nope, that's nightmares for life.

Yikes, clearly touched a nerve there. Calm down :S

Edit #2: Whatever other bad things Ken Loach has done, I will personally never forgive him for unleashing the unrelenting misery-fest that is 'Kes' Sick
