Very interesting - and Alyn Shipton has, by today's standards, one of the best presenting styles on radio.

I've been listening to a fair amount of Zappa recently and I'd say his music is equal parts jazz, rock, symphonic and Benny Hill.

The man was an absolute genius. Beautiful, sometimes crazy music. A master of many genres.
I'd say Hot Rats and The Grand Wazoo are jazz classics.

There are jazz influences in the work of Zappa's buddy Captain Beefheart, particularly on some of Trout Mask Replica, but be warned, the album exists in a universe nothing like ours!
