There was a sketch at the beginning about a Greek phrase book (I think) and the audience were in raptures at some bits (it did go on too long as well) so I can only assume they were all pissed out of their heads, when you would laugh at anything. There's been a lot of other comedy under the bridge since then remember. For its time it was really original and groundbreaking.

I hear what you are saying (Hancock still holds up though) and the later ones were very funny (I have lots on cassette), BUT this first two series are rubbish!

Actually now thinking about it, the early Hancock's that R4+ are airing at the moment are not a patch on the later ones with Hattie.
