If I had been a betting man which I'm not as I know my smarts whatever they are I would have sworn that Chappers would have been on here celebrating John Otway's 67th Birthday. Maybe he's at the party?:

The, erm, presentation by DLT stalls breathlessly between "Wild Willy" and "Barrett" so that the word "Barrett" is never mentioned although it is on the record label. It is as if he has something else on his mind - himself and his pants presumably with reference to sundry bazookas. I'm not at all impressed - it might have been different if he had any easily identifiable talent - but I'm also not impressed that the word bazookas has been outlawed. Did I get the question wrong? Oh pardon me. Bring on the duck noise from Manchester. Wang. Wang. Though naughtily is it really a k? And then brassy Kershaw or Long for the wholly "apolitical" "unspiteful" "verdict. Yup. Did the BBC make him a millionaire? Bejeesus.

Happy birthday too to Mike Rutherford.

It's more 80s than my 80s......but it is for my mate Simon right now, not that he watches this channel:

In truth, I am not sure quite what the relationship with Dad there has been. This moment affects him nevertheless. Maybe as with other people's partnerships we can never know. I would never suggest that an old guy who had two sons, neither of whom is gay, neither of whom was ugly, neither of whom was hugely lacking in confidence and neither of whom ever got a girlfriend for longer than two months, let alone got married and had kids, acquired dementia for that reason.

However, it is a modest conservative family. It has been going on a long time. And it may be that in a roundabout way the sheer incompatibility of feminist liberalism is driving some men mad, albeit skipping a generation. We 50 somethings merely take such things in our stride. It isn't as if he died early. He's 85. But he's been in a poor way for up to 15 years. I support women's football. I support women's boxing. I support women's kick boxing. But it comes with a heavy proviso.

Don't do it in Parliament. Don't murder men,. And if you want a role model look to Barbara Castle or Jennie Lee or Ellen Wilkinson, all of whom I adored for being difficult if mainly right and feisty and very attractive women in their way without being girly killers. Back in the day we would laugh about who we would be with. There was little doubt that mine would have red hair and the set-up would be warm but argumentative. I don't think that we ever realised that the warmth would dissipate into the most violent warp of masculinity. So be it. It ain't turned us. It deeply disturbed the war generations as it was designed to do. Harman furious that her mother had to balance her law books on the stove as she cooked while Daddy raked it in as served in Harley Street. Well, it ain't real is it. Never was to most people. They live in another world.

Whereas of course my father is deeply frustrating and it ain't easy with his fading but I have been lucky and actually we have been close. Why else would I have gone up to Tynemouth last year where he was evacuated to see and bring photos home for him? This was never ever one of my songs - it barely registered until I went there - and then it was in my head our song. How weird is that? The competitive elements in his decline send mixed messages alongside his support and currently I feel that he will outlive me which is kind of intimidating in its way. On some level, it is probably almost Oedipal.

Anyhow: : it's - and I would never once have thought I would say these words - Jimmy Nail:

But for today and for everyone, female and male, young and old, support it : it's so special:

When my Mum and Dad go:

I haven't ruled out living there, getting a season ticket for Newcastle Utd and promoting the legend the late Alan Hull. I just adore North Yorkshire up to the far North East (excluding the city of Durham which is now a big disappointment . :)

Alan Hull and Lindisfarne - Good To Be Here?

Extraordinary of many extra-ordinaries:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yG2YT6zK67o

And the great synth one, more down to earth : It's a travel song, standard, but the only one that ever went in the UK from east to west, while the tune is unremarkable and even plonking, it just has that lyric which hits your heart to the core and the harmonica never done better which sums them up really. Full marks too to Ray Jackson and all the other members:.

We shall not hear their like again:

(never let your suspension drop out on the M62, whichever way you choose on that particular night to travel) :)

Sorry - I'm daubing my paints everywhere for which apologies but it is only enthusiasm.

Can I do a couple of lesser known County Durham Paddys? I hope so. Then I will retire. The first, little known, is a round I think. Row Row Your Boat. Frere Jacgues. Three Blind Mice. These are rounds. It starts in the 16th Century. You get it in Haydn. I'm not sure that I know of any other attempt than by the brilliant god that is Brian Wilson. God Only Knows is a round, No one knows that, Not even God, Anyways, Real (new) Life is Just Around - a round, geddit?, - the Corner. Genius.

So, the greatest songwriter of the 1980s and he had far more genuine competitors than history recalls becomes enigmatic and cultist. Well, he always was. Didn't want to be a star, Alleged to have over a hundred albums in the vaults only to be heard once he's gone. Christ, if that isn't good reason to outlive him I don't know what is. We could find in our 90s the resurgence of music which links back to Cole Porter, Disney, Lennon and McCartney, 10CC and Morrissey and Marr when they were viable. He goes downhill. Tinnitus. Terrrible tinnitus. Severe deterioration of eyesight. Not a Specsavers thing. A serious disease. He listens to all night radio. Phone ins. Nothing else to do. None too impressed although touched in places. And I mean really what an awful situation. "I Trawl the Megarhertz" is released in 2003. It has none of the typical vibe and is a challenge but then true to form. Love him. It isn't an easy ride. An uncommercial thing with an American woman which presents the stand out points of those phone ins. It is gloom. But it is also him and it is also like nothing else and it is extremely artistic. This year, what happens? It's re-released not under his own name but obtusely Prefab Sprout:

I Trawl The Megahertz:

Between the last Prefab album which was ages ago and this, we did actually get a Prefab album of sorts. And f**kin 'ell - pardon my language - when I heard it I thought omg, gobsmacking, this beats the pants off all else and I want it played at my funeral. So, yep, if I do move NE it isn't just in the name of Al Hull but also to promote Mcaloon. I love these guys:

Yes, yes, thank you John for the response. It is impossible to sum up musical taste. Certainly I'm not categorised by genre, I will give a try at five words which sum up my taste - atmospherics - I am extremely keen on atmospherics. emotion - I have logic but am an emotional soul, offbeat, though not in a contrived way which means, genuine individuality, classicism - certainly in songwriting and at live events congregation. Something along those lines,. I don't need all of them together. The congregation is something which works several ways - when I did have my long guitar indie period, I did feel a broad connection as many would do. Less so now and I miss it but belief in the music has to be at the heart of it and feeling. :)

I kind of like where loads of people get together and agree with enthusiasm on something that is unexpected. I would go back to Detectorists. It is atmospheric, emotional, offbeat and classic (as well as funny). I am a bit similar with music though as I say not everything on my list has to be in the pot. Hope this helps!

Goodnight folks. :D

Have you ever encountered The Mountain Goats in your travels up North?
They are my obsession at the moment. It's really just John Darnielle and whoever he can persuade to play along.
They have a recent album but this is from 2005.
I picked this track to keep the football theme going. Not that it's about the famous Midlands team of course.

I went to see the Manfreds last night and Paul Jones is a brilliant showman. They covered all sorts of stuff including Tom McGuiness (Flint's) Malt and Barley Blues and When I'm Dead And Gone.

Then unexpectedly they did a great version of the Crusaders' Put it where you want it.

Lots of hits and then some bluesy jazz stuff too. A great show and a great night. I recommend it to anyone interested in general popular music.

Is this the band with Manfred actually in it?
Mike d'Abo is in one, isn't he?

Abbey Road number in one in the charts after fifty years.
Mind you it knocked a Gallagher of the top so the charts can't be up to much these days.

Manfred Mann is not in the band which is why they're just called the Manfreds. Last night the only originals were Paul and Tom. Mike D'abo was touring with them a year or so ago as well as Mike Hugg.

It was Paul all the girls seemed to lust after.

And he's still the one in the middle looking sweet.

Mum whose 8-year-old kid won't wash up: Wash up, you lazy bastard.
Mum when he's 11 and still won't wash up: Wash up, you lazy f**king bastard.
Mum when he's 18 and STILL won't wash up: Wash up, you f**king lazy f**king bastard.
Mum when he's a rock star and she's being interviewed: I remember he'd never wash up, and I loved that about him. It was part of his character, y'know, I am who I am, don't tell me what to do, I'm gonna be a star, and I always respected and encouraged that attitude. What a dude!
