What are you listening to now? Page 1,332

At my last job one of the cleaners noticed I had a packet of Snaps (the tomato flavour corn snack that has a moreish factor off the chart) and I had bought 3 for £1 so gave her a packet. She said she hadn't had them for years and when I told her they were available at a service station a few minutes away we were besties :D Every day we would chat about snacks and nibbles.

"Yes". A true gem of a song, UL-ed two intros for you. By Aleksandr Zatsepin.

Not that it would be immediately obvious but there is a bit of method in my madness.

Joe Meek produced:

The Tornados - Telstar : https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4B7ypA1fSwU :)

And two of the best social environment songs of all time, both deeply spiritual in their ways:

Paul Wellerard - and The Jam - That's Entertainment : https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UigR_AAP97Q

Annie, just wow/Renaissance - A Song For All Seasons : https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YdszVEg6e1Q

(Has there been a better female British rock/pop singer than Annie? - erm, no - she's from the north and still alive) :D

She has got a beautiful voice and made some wonderful records.

I would though say that maybe Sonja Christina or even Christine Perfect/McVie are as good if not better.

Eddie Carroll and His Orchestra (1939)

Odd little film of about 10 minutes I stumbled upon on TPTV and in the opening scene my attention was grabbed by a jazz guitarist who was absolutely brilliant!! His name was Curly Clayton, real name Harvey Ormerod according to IMDb, and I found this blog about him.

https://gypsyjazzuk.wordpress.com/36-2/curly-clayton/

He was still alive up to only 10 years ago and I have to confess, I'd never heard of him; but boy, he good!!

Lindisfarne featuring the heroic Geordie "People's Poet" Alan Hull (1945-1995)

Clear White Light, Live at Newcastle City Hall:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2_IPFOTUpEo

(Every Christmas, every year - for years : this must have been one of his last before he died at 50 : cracks me up every time I watch it, tearful, but in a great way - 'cos 13 years earlier I was there) :)

And while it is at the slightly twee poppy end of indie, if indie at all, you can't say fairer than this one as Dario G knew when he used it much later for "Suncvhme"

Dream Academy - Life In A Northern Town:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5UXnulANF8g

(I was effectively born in the winter of 1963 when "it felt like the world would freeze" : I came home from hospital by bus on Boxing Day '62 when the five months of snow started : my mother never saw a post pregnancy helper for the entire duration : they couldn't get through the blizzards that clung to these hills : not to wish to disconcert but I think we've got one coming; I feel it in my bones : get yer industrial strength de-icers out) :)

I finally broke down and bought a turntable, so after it arrives today I'll be able to listen to all the vinyl that I've accumulated over the years. My neighbor and I are going to have weekly listening parties while drinking beer/scotch.

That sounds excellent DB, Good luck with it. I am not huge on The Who. This is probably one of my favourites by them. But it's the video of it on YT. When I saw it a couple of weeks ago, I was totally gobsmacked by it. It is so, so, good:

The Who - Baba O'Riley : https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gY5rztWa1TM

(It can be read in a lot of different ways but it just seems to capture an essence)

Nice. Don't really associate them with instrumentals.

Talking of instrumentals...

The Comet Is Coming - Summon The Fire

Reintroducing Broken Social Scene : Fire Eye'd Boy..........the Canadian indie scene was so great before multi-faced Trudeau.
The music is like a New Order B side, geographically displaced - ie great - and it's one of the best music vids of all time:

Maybe we could have suggestions for great music videos?

Just a suggestion.

I love the Rumble Strips and Motorcycle.........omg, I am becoming so 21st Century.

George Ezra fans (and Sir Kevin Rowland) will be having an orgasm. ;)

We could also do some favourite album art work although it has to go with music you love.

".......The Young Soul Rebels" was one of me big seminal albums. I had to move my head to meet them but quickly decided that Dexys Midnight Runners were one of the greatest groups this country has ever produced. I still believe it. That pleases me as so many early ideas die. I know at 17 I was right on this one, I absolutely adore the distinctive idiosyncrasy of Kev. At Camp Bestival ('09?) I danced to his own favourite soul records with hundreds of others as he glanced weirdly and not without the appearance of malevolence out of a darkened booth. It was so gloriously odd, I almost felt high on it.

And back in the day, I strongly identified with the lad on the cover;

There There My Dear - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZjwUX5MKJOo

Critics snotty at the time.

Now:

No 16 in NME's Greatest British Albums, No 42 - Melody Maker All Time Albums, No 93 - The Guardian Best Albums Ever : but then I am thick as a brick on everything but music where I was blessed - no talent : genes plus trauma - with an ear.

(Of all things, SCD tonight had accolades for Eileen off Too-Rye-Ay as 'classic': it is, it will last forever, they were ace) :)

Old Kev, as I guess many of us are now, but we ain't gonna fit in to the blueprint. Cos in some ways sadly our types can't. It's probably swings and roundabouts for everybody. Some you win. Some you lose. Whatever ended up working for you. That's cool, I love this - I will sign off for tonight now. Hope some light came your way on what has been a UK rainy day:
