The general pop/rock - music thread Page 188

I heard this song for the first time recently and was convinced it must be by some 90s Weezer-esque alternative band, until I googled them.

Not sure that this is entirely the right thread to boast of this but, hey, at least the man on the Clapham omnibus (of a certain age at least) may have heard of them, which is more than can be said for the majority of acts mentioned hereon:

I'm off to see a Flanders & Swann tribute act in Guildford tomorrow night.

Wow! That's the last tribute act I would have thought someone would do. Have you seen them before? And presumably as original with one on piano and one in a wheelchair?

Again, I'd like to know how it went and what you thought of them. :)

No, not seen them before. Just happened to notice it in the theatre's brochure. There's an excerpt of the show at the bottom of this link - there doesn't seem to be a wheelchair involved.

Oh, well "Swann" seems to be playing the part and I wouldn't have thought it would be disrespectful for "Flanders" to appear in wheelchair would it?

Here's how I remember them with much fondness :-

Yes, interesting. I bet they daren't do that first one tomorrow night! Clearly recordings do exist then. I've searched in the past for videos/DVDs but to no avail. CDs are available of course.

What a coincidence! Such an act is performing at my local community centre later this afternoon.

Unfortunately, I can't attend as I'm expecting the gas man.

Wasn't he due on Monday morning?

Brilliant! Laughing out loud

I can't believe people STILL think 'Knocking on Heaven's Door' was originally by Eric Clapton. It was Guns 'n' Roses, DUH!

Will go to a Manfred Mann's Earth Band concert on Sunday.

I've got tickets to see the other Manfreds in October.

I think that's on Odyssy and Oracle (can't remember the actual spelling but I know it's wrong) which is a classic album you have to listen too.

A very entertaining show, lasting 2 hours 10 minutes (including an interval and with two encores), comprising both the songs and the wit of Flanders & Swann with just the right amount of audience participation (joining in 2 or 3 choruses of their most well-known songs). They are taking it to the Edinburgh Festival apparently. It was done as a tribute to Flanders & Swann (with both performers referring to each other by their own names - Tim & Duncan - while referring to Flanders & Swann themselves in the third person) rather than trying to act as the originals - hence the lack of a wheelchair. A format they agreed with the families of both Michael Flanders & Donald Swann as they wanted the focus to be on the original performers rather than on themselves.

Thank you :)

OK all you aficionados of Wilco, Tinariven and The Go Team! Errr you can have your thread back now,

The Manfred Mann's Earth Band concert on sunday was quite good. But their "support act" Glenn Hughes was even better. This man's in his late 60s but still has a hell of a voice!
