Brilliant band

Tonight I'm going to see this guy at an historic Texas dance hall:

Next week I'm going to see these bands at SXSW in Austin:

Isn't America brilliant!?

When I was very young, the only exciting things in life were cowboys and gangsters and funny cartoons at the Saturday morning matinee - and for me, that was America!

I know America gets a lot of stick but, let's face it - if they hadn't come over here in 1942, I'd be typing this post in fluent German!

Or if the Japs hadn't attacked them.

Or if the Japs hadn't attacked them.

My uncle was in America during World War II and he met a Japanese secret agent who, after a lot of drinks one evening, told him he'd been planted in the country as what they call a "sleeper" just waiting patiently to be called into action.

Over time, my uncle formed the impression that this guy was none too bright and his impression was proved correct one evening in a little nightclub where he and his Japanese friend were having a few drinks in the run-up to Christmas 1941.

Imagine my uncle's surprise when, entirely without warning, his friend suddenly stormed the stage and attacked Pearl Bailey!

To be fair, only Kurt Vile is an American. Fontaines D.C. are Irish, Viagra Boys are Swedish, and Black Midi are British. I think the Viagra Boys' singer is American, however.

:D

I love the Spice Girls (scoop) but even I laughed at this in the doc: 'Emma substituted a girl called Michelle. Michelle just wasn't fitting into Spice. I wonder why? I mean, she was a great singer, great dancer, great songwriter...' You just answered your question.

Is Fontaines D.C this weekend? Damn that Boys From The Better Land is catchy :D I was drawn to it by the Snooker hall and I like the video. I call that kind of music the pint spiller. People jump up to start dancing not caring if a glug full of their pint sploshes on to the floor or nearby patron.

Good long interview with Terry Hall on this afternoon's Nihal Arthanayake radio show on 5 live. Well worth a listen once it's on iPlayer. Starts after the 2 o'clock news.

Did he have Lenny the Lion with him as well?

They're playing 10 shows in Austin over the course of the week. I saw them Wednesday afternoon and managed to get a spot in the front row in front of the singer, Grian. Ten minutes into their set a bass amp kicked the bucket halfway through a song, so they hurriedly plugged into another amp, which also failed, so they just walked off the stage. Total letdown, but the songs they played were great.

Speaking of spilling drinks, about 45 minutes after he walked off the stage, I was outside enjoying a beer and Grian gestured at my IDLES shirt and told me that he liked it, while also spilling his drink on the knee of my jeans. He tried to wipe it up and I just laughed it off and told him that I'd see them again in May when they open for IDLES.

Their first album comes out next month and it's gonna be a cracker. Those guys have something special going on.

Someone filmed most of their abortive set. Luckily you can't see my fat head in this one.

And the Beatles were guests on his show back in 1963.

He and Lenny are in one of my questions for Only Connect next year that I have had accepted, and I didn't have to look it up 'cos I remember him well. :(

Used to love Lenny the Lion. :D

It hardly seems possible that the last time I went to a live gig in Central London was 2004 (the Lemonheads) and a festival in 2009 but at a very ripe age I ventured back in tonight. The 100 Club no less. How the hell I did it I don't know. Obviously I'm proud. On the way back, the power lines went down just south of East Croydon and I was on a verge of a gigantic panic attack - thanks to the 30 something guy who helped me to be calm : I was lucky that it was you beside me and nobody else : very grateful - but, hey, the gig. The 80 year old soul singer who should have been huge in the 1970s but wasn't because nobody had ever heard of him until last year was f**king amazing and I don't swear so he was that good. Bloody fantastic - and frankly gobsmacking. Role model. Joy model, I loved it. I loved it. I loved it. Spread the word. !! (I was also at Sutton Utd earlier - another first - but left at half time cos of the wind)
