DeAnne Smith is a Canadian-American stand-up comedian who is pushing 40 but who could play a 17-year-old in a high school movie without raising any suspicion at all.

If you haven't seen her, just imagine a petite David Bowie in Sue Perkins' glasses and you'll get the picture.

For an openly gay stand-up comedienne in this day and age, she's remarkable in three ways: she gives no impression of being anti-men, she gives no impression of feeling threatened by a predominantly straight society and she's actually likeable.

In addition, she's funny and intelligent.
