The general pop/rock - music thread Page 174

OK. Well I like lots of obscure music but I tried to put together my Top 10 of music classics. That is hits that really move me.

Mine is as follows "in no particular order!"

1. Born to run - Bruce Springsteen
2. California Dreaming - Mamas and the Papas
3. I was made to love her - Stevie Wonder
4. In my life - the Beatles
5. "Heroes" - David Bowie
6. It might as well rain until September - Carole King
7. Goodbye to love - Carpenters
8. Afterglow - Small Faces
9. You've lost that lovin' feeling - Righteous Brothers
=10. Band on the run - Wings
=10. Reward - Teardrop Explodes

They're all songs that I can hear over and over again without getting sick of them.

Harvest - Neil Young
Fairytale of New York - The Pogues
Streets of London - Ralph McTell
Those Were The Days - Mary Hopkin
Both Sides Now - Judy Collins
Fun Fun Fun - The Beach Boys

I've got lots of gigs on the go at the moment so I'll give it a miss for now thanks.

Chappers its top and bottom or your one for me. I watched the Born to run tour and for £16 including coach I was in the 4th row in a uni theatre and they had to put bin bags on the windows to make it dark. And I sat and watched the boss and the E Street Band do an almost 4 hour gig finishing on Rosalita.
As for the Teardrop Explodes when they filmed Reward at the Albert Dock I was down there with a friend who was in an even better local band called Afraid of Mice. They could have been massive but the lead singer went full on pop star way too soon and the record company dropped them , were as Julian Cope at least waited to go mad.

When were these shows?

Springsteen was about 79 -81 at Bingley Hall, The Teardrop Explodes wasn't a concert it was a video set in the Albert dock when it was in ruins. I did see them along with Deaf School and other local bands at a club called Erics . I was never a big fan of the Bunny Men and to this day it pains me to say it as a Scouser but Beatles aside Manchester has produced more and better bands, From the Stone Roses to Joy Division and from 10cc to the Smiths and thats leaving Oasis out which no one would .

Tin Soldier - Small Faces
Kidney Bingos - Wire
Burning Down the House - Talking Heads
All Along the Watchtower - Jimi Hendrix
The Ghost of Tom Joad - Rage Against The Machine
Across the Universe - Beatles
Gracias por la Vida - Mercedes Sosa and Joan Baez
Good Times, Bad Times - Led Zeppelin
I'm a Man - Spencer Davis Group
You Really Got Me - Kinks
Common People - Pulp
Never Loved a Man - Aretha Franklin

Holds up lighter in salute !

Were these all hits? I mean chart hits. I've got loads of obscure stuff too but I wanted to highlight true everlasting classics,

Mine are pretty well-known, surely? Beatles, Kinks, Small Faces, Hendrix? I realise there are twelve instead of ten, though...

I thought it was songs you like? I hate to be pedantic Chappers but if you like them then surely they can't be obscure to you and as its your own personal top ten it should be fine.
If however it is only top ten tunes allowed then Beaky is well out of order and should be shot under the 'Thin end of the wedge rule' :)

Ten Tunes I would have on my Juke Box

Denise -Blondie

Sound & Vision -Bowie

Family Affair Sly Stone

Yellow Brick Road Elton John

Do you know the Way to San Jose -Dion Warwick

Oh Babe -Hurricane Smith

Waterloo Sunset The Kinks

Move on Up Curtis Mayfield

Man on the Moon REM

Pyscho Killer Talking Heads

Good selection although for Mr Smith I prefer Don't let it die.

Oh and Blondie's was officially Denis being a cover version of Denise.

Its good but Oh Babe and Misty by Ray Stevens just remind me of someone close from back in the day and I hear them singing it, so its more sentiment I suppose . On a guilty listening front I also love Mike Nesmiths Flying Down To Rio and Carol Bayer Sagers Moving out , thats my quaint corner I suppose .

Yes I forgot they changed it to the masculine for commercial reasons , to be honest I sang Deni and dropped the E anyway .
