OFAH: top 5 guest characters

I am talking about the top 5 characters for a 1 off episode.

Cassandra in Rodney Come Home

'The Shadow' (Lenny Lenox) in The Longest Night

Tony Angelino in Stage Fright

Roy Slater in May The Force Be With You

Lisa in Tea For Three

Hi George,

I'm not quite getting it. Do you mean one off characters who only appeared in one episode? Or best supporting character in a particular episode?

I'm pretty sure the character of Lisa was also in The Frog's Legacy, Slater was in two other episodes and Cassandra became a regular character.

And do you mean just in 'Only Fools And Horses', or sitcom series in general?

If...

...then here are mine for Alan Partridge ("Knowing..." and "I'm..."):

-The boxing promoter in KMKYWAP who got cleared from murder charges

-Kevil Eldon's character

-Dan Moody (Steve Mangan)

-Jed "The Mentalist" Maxwell

-Peter Baynham's character ("Dr No...Vocal Chords")

Although I alternate between Baynham
and the pupeteer in KMKYWAP with his "Cheeky Monkey"

Wanda Ventham, Joan Sims, Robert Glenister, Nicholas Courtney and the Fred Tomlinson Singers?

(here)

I agree completely with The Shadow and Tony Angelino.

The Driscoll brothers were also entertaining.

Mostly though I think the guests were just used as straight men and the regulars got the bulk of the laughs.

Joan Sims?

I can't believe it. Wanda is nearly 80. I remember her initially in the Lotus Eaters.

That's a show I'd like to watch again - now I've grown up and would probably understand it more.

NOT a comedy.

Wasn't Casandra in more than one episode?

The change of the thread title makes my earlier post being off topic.

Still a little bit off topic: The worst guest performance was the one by the manager of the mall in The Longest Night. A throwback to the 70s...instead of playing it straight and rely on the good script he tries to be "funny" and gets it all wrong. A shame because otherwise the episode is great.

Agreed. Also the majority of the female characters in the early series are terribly wooden and one dimensional.

I second this: I love 'Ray Beesley and Cheeky Monkey' and Kevin Eldon's performance in IAP is just pure class.

As Lennox 'The Shadow' Gilby, Tony Angelino, Roy Slater and the Driscoll bros have already been mentioned, I've deliberately not included them:

Corrine (Denzil's wife)
June
Mental Mickey
Aunt Reenie
Steven the Yuppie
David Beckham (only kidding)

My favourite none off characters (I'm not counting Rock & Chips) are:

Sunglasses Ron
Paddy the Greek
Monkey Harris
Joan Trotter
Freddie 'The Frog' Robdal

Good call (had to go check out the Episode)
You can tell he's playing to the audience, whereas the rest are playing to each other - as good actors should.
Every time he's in shot it's as if the room changes from a real manager's office to a cardboard set.
Director's fault really - and you think DJ would have had a word to say about it, too.
Not good.

It's one of those rare occasions when something just feels wrong in OFAH.
The other annoying and sub-standard thing is when Mike's performance is reduced to just asking something like "what happened next?" or "did you get it in the end?" and you know there is a cheap punchline on the way to be delivered by someone of the main cast. That's a double shame because I like Mike's character and the actor and he'd have deserved better.
