Yes, well, Alex Petridis. I have some time for these people when they are able to provide the "immortal" historical contexts. Nevertheless, that "but what can pop and rock say now?" is becoming almost biblical. Paul Morley has shown an ability to broaden but only retrospectively to Surman. Just swap a couple of vowels and that tells you absolutely everything.
When the future is still Brian Eno - "recorded music equals whale blubber" - it is all about adjustment problems. That is wholly acceptable in ordinary Joes like us of an uncertain age. But it's naff in those who made a profession out of presenting trend as substance. It shouldn't take masses of energy to walk their microscopic critique across to the present day.
To my mind, music designed in boardrooms lacks authenticity. I also accept that authenticity has changed. Jake Bugg is a modern artist. He will inevitably be a compromise but choosing Rubin as producer doesn't suggest a wholesale sell-out. And when you consider the likes of Clapton, he was revered for his earlier reference points so mainly the digs are about age.
