Learning that Mr. Lomas, their agent and a theatrical impresario, has lost his financial backing, performers Arthur and "Stinker" set about securing funds to keep themselves and their friends in work without him.

Lomas's regular patron, Lady Randall is a former music hall star who married into the aristocracy and has latterly been a keen benefactor of the stage herself, so they attempt to appeal to her directly. Unfortunately on arrival at her London home the domestic staff leave the pair in no illusion as to their welcome!

Noticing a queue of people to the tradesmen's entrance, Stinker soon discovers that Randall is in fact holding open interviews for a new cook and butler - preferably husband and wife - and they decide to make their entrance to the property by joining the applicants instead. Arthur is despatched to find "Bobbie", Stinker's girlfriend, but after a number of hours' fruitless searching, returns in female disguise himself!

Eventually gaining an audience with the great Lady Randall herself, Arthur and Stinker find their time curtailed before they can reveal their true identities and purpose - and are hired! It seems there are a great many pressing matters on Lady Randall's mind, not least of which is her ageing, crotchety and fellow former-music hall performer father, "Pop", and her own desire to leave the city for a week in Harrogate.

It thus quickly comes to pass that the duo are left looking after the devilish old rogue - convinced his daughter's staff are trying to poison him, and reluctant to follow any rules they or his doctor have set out - in the house by themselves. A week's relative quiet, away from the prying eyes of the established members of the household staff, will at least ensure they can get to grips with the roles of butler and cook: but what then?
