Interview with actress Natalie Casey

Paulette in Legally Blonde The Musical. Natalie Casey

She's the actress famed for playing the brash Donna Henshaw in the down to earth and typically British comedy series, Two Pints of Lager and a Packet of Crisps, but now Natalie Casey is starring in a hit musical in the West End, as Amy May Keenan explains...

Playing Paulette Buonofonte in the all singing and dancing stage adaptation of American film Legally Blonde, Natalie couldn't have picked a project more different from the Runcorn settings of Two Pints.

For the few people who haven't seen the film that put Reese Witherspoon on the map, Elle Woods is the pink loving sorority girl who becomes a Harvard law student to win back her ex-boyfriend. Along the way she befriends Paulette, a woman so unlucky in love it's actually funny.

Though Legally Blonde and Two Pints are polar opposites in genre - something evident from their titles alone - the two major roles of Natalie's career do have something in common. Donna and Paulette have been the memorable and comical roles that Natalie has made her own; so much so, you couldn't imagine anyone else playing them. If that's not a sign of a good actress, then what is?

Hi Natalie. Can you tell us about your character in Legally Blonde?

I play Paulette Buonofonte, a kind of wacky, sad in the soul hairdresser who befriends Elle Woods. Elle ultimately helps her find love, which makes her life complete. It's dramatic, huh?

How does the play differ from the film?

I've actually never seen the film. Yeah I know... shocker! But I'm glad I haven't because it would only influence the way you play the part and I don't think that's a good thing.

What is your favourite moment so far of appearing in Legally Blonde?

This will sound really cheesy but I honestly think this is the best job I've ever done so every day is mega for me. Don't cry or I will too.

What other comedy films do you think could be adapted for stage?

I'd love to see Ferris Bueller's Day Off. Also Showgirls - that's a comedy, right?

Who do you personally rate in comedy?

I love Tina Fey more than life itself! Also Madeline Kahn was a legend, Joan Cusack is a genius and Catherine Keener is a god.

What is your favourite comedy show?

My favourite comedy series is Frasier. It was effortless, timeless and totally classy. My favourite comedy film is The Big Lebowski. I must have seen it a million times and nothing, so far, has ever eclipsed it.

Do you prefer working in comedy to other genres?

I love working in comedy because it really is the greatest feeling in the world to make people laugh. Well that and cleaning your ears out with a cotton bud whilst sitting on the toilet!
