The most searched for comedians

Here's some interesting research looking at which comedians people are searching for most on Google. It looks like the following comics are currently getting the most online attention...

1. Michael McIntyre (246,000 Monthly Searches)

Michael McIntyre is still Britain's top stand-up comedian it would appear - and he's not even on TV at the moment. Michael McIntyre's Comedy Roadshow still sparks a great deal of internet interest it seems, and there's lots of searching for tickets for his big arena tour, which starts in the autumn of 2012. This research was conducted before he quit Britain's Got Talent... so he's likely to be even further ahead in the search rankings now!

2. Russell Brand (201,000)

Russell Brand's Ponderland. Russell Brand. Copyright: Vanity Projects Limited

Although the general public seem to have put Sachsgate well and truly behind them, Russell Brand is still generating hits in cyberspace related to the scandal. Searchers are also looking for happier information though, including details about his wedding to Katy Perry and his publication, My Booky Wook. There also seems to be some suspicion surrounding whether or not it is actually Brand singing on the Get Him to the Greek soundtrack (it really is him!)

3= Lee Evans (165,000)

Lee Evans Live In Scotland. Lee Evans. Copyright: Little Mo Films

Lee Evans' tour, which is currently making its way around the UK, is prompting the clicking of many a mouse nationwide.

There's also still huge demand for Mr Evans' version of Bohemian Rhapsody too it would seem, as well as searches for quotes and jokes, and people asking Google for information on 'Lee Evans Wife' (her name's Heather if you were wondering).

3= Russell Howard (165,000)

Russell Howard's Good News. Russell Howard. Copyright: Avalon Television

In joint third position with Lee Evans is Russell Howard, with plenty of Brits searching for content related to his appearances in Mock the Week (even though he's now left the show) and Russell Howard's Good News, his hit BBC Three comedy show. People are also hunting for Howard's Twitter account and bizarrely, the term 'Russell Howard gay' features in a few Google queries! Fear not though Russell, people are also searching for your girlfriend!

4. Peter Kay (135,000)

Peter Kay

Peter Kay is known within the industry as being very competitive, so he probably won't like not being at the top of this list... but the Northern comic has been quite quiet recently. However, he's now got a new book out and there's renewed interest in his sitcom Phoenix Nights (with rumours of a new film spin-off), so he's likely to be back right near the top soon though.

5= Alan Carr (110,000)

Spexy beast Alan Carr's Channel 4 show, Chatty Man, has prompted a lot of Googling lately, as has his recent tour.

However interesting Google searches have included international scouting for the How to Quit Smoking guide by his almost-namesake Allen Carr, rather than the comedian himself.

5= John Bishop (110,000)

John Bishop's Britain. John Bishop. Copyright: Objective Productions / 3 Amigos Productions

A few years ago John Bishop was working in sales for a pharmaceutical company... now he's one of the UK's biggest comedians. Probably owing to his primetime Saturday night BBC show, there are plenty of monthly searches for Mr Bishop. Other topics of interest for people searching for the Liverpudlian include his appearance in Channel 4's Skins, his forthcoming tour dates and - a reoccurring theme for these comedians it seems - his wife!

6. Tim Minchin (90,500)

Strings. Jonny (Tim Minchin). Copyright: BBC

The Aussie odd man sparks many a search as people look for lyrics to his weird and wonderful songs. Prejudice and Storm are two Google favourites and plenty more people are on the hunt for his videos on YouTube. Another big hit is his involvement with the BBC Proms, which saw him perform the very first Comedy Prom last month.

7= Jimmy Carr (74,000)

Commercial Breakdown. Jimmy Carr. Copyright: Celador Productions

Perhaps a reflection of his comedy-style, a huge number of Jimmy Carr-related searches are people looking for one liners and jokes. As with most comedians there are lots of people looking for DVDs, tickets and tours, but there's a stand-out odd search query too for this comedian: "Jimmy Carr's laugh"!

7= Jason Manford (74,000)

Comedy Rocks With Jason Manford. Jason Manford. Copyright: ITV Studios

Probably owing to his well-publicised Twitter misdemeanours earlier this year, there are still lots of searchers looking for 'Jason Manford scandal' and 'Jason Manford wife'. On a brighter note, his fans have forgiven him and are regularly searching for his tickets and tour too. There's also been recent interest in his appearance on ITV's Born to Shine, which saw him win the show by singing opera.

8. Sarah Millican (60,500)

Sarah Millican

As Sarah Millican is about to embark on a tour she is enjoying some well-earned Google prestige. This may also have been sparked by her many recent TV appearances, a regular slot on daytime show Loose Women and her run at this year's Edinburgh Festival. Plenty of nosey people want to know about her boyfriend too! (To save you looking: it's one-liner comic Gary Delaney).

9= Eddie Izzard (49,500)

Eddie Izzard

Eddie Izzard's back catalogue of avant-garde stand-up is still popular - his musings on a Death Star Canteen are regularly looked for. St Albans-based comedy fans were quite clearly excited for the Laughs in the Park 2011 gig, which saw Eddie on stage with Ross Noble and Tommy Tiernan at the town's Verulamium Park.

9= Bill Bailey (49,500)

Comic's Choice. Bill Bailey. Copyright: Unique Productions

We thought Bill Bailey would be higher on this list if we're honest. He's currently over in the US on his Dandelion Mind tour, but the musical comic hasn't been totally forgotten by his UK fans, who are still conducting Bill Bailey searches in his absence. They mostly relate to his previous tours, however there are still loads of people looking for information on his headline gig at Sonisphere Festival this year, and his cover of Metallica's Enter Sandman.

9= Jack Whitehall (49,500)

The Secret Census. Jack Whitehall. Copyright: Magnum Media

Just like Russell Howard, people are searching for news of a Mrs Jack Whitehall, but also for news of Jack coming out of the closet! The young comic's appearance at this year's Edinburgh Festival has also got people searching for him, and there are plenty of people hunting down his Twitter account too. He could soon rise up this list as he's just proved to everyone that he's a surprisingly fine actor too... his performance in new Channel 4 comedy drama Fresh Meat has been widely praised.

10. Al Murray (40,500)

Al Murray The Pub Landlord: Live At The Palladium. The Pub Landlord (Al Murray). Copyright: Avalon Television

Last but not least, it's Britain's most searched for Pub Landlord. Al Murray's gigs in Dubai are demanding a lot of attention; he hosted a three night residency over in the Middle East this month. Also popular are his quotes, tickets and his biography.
