Who is the Funniest British Comedian?

The title of the 'funniest British comedian' is often hotly debated. The truth is, there is no definitive answer to the question... it's down to individual tastes, which vary. If you're a Millennial, your favourite is likely to be a younger performer, whereas someone older may choose an 'old school' comedian who has been working the comedy circuit for decades.

Here are four names that regularly crop up in conversations though...

Jimmy Carr

Jimmy Carr has been performing for many years but he has that crossover effect where he still looks relatively young and appeals to younger and older audiences alike. He is also the top result on Google, when you search for the phrase 'Who is the Funniest British Comedian?' due to a study that looked at TV stand-up specials and how often people laughed whilst watching them.

Set to resume his Terribly Funny UK tour soon, he maintains his youthful looks with Botox treatments - something that Amanda Holden poked fun at recently, just in time to help the ticket sales.

Carr can also be found performing stand-up comedy in famous casinos, such as the GrandWest Casino Arena in South Africa, where he is also said to hang around after the show for a few games of poker. But if you cannot follow in Jimmy's footsteps, why not try the best UK online casino games instead? It's the next best thing.

Peter Kay

Peter Kay

Born in 1973, Peter Kay attracts audiences of all ages. The multi-faceted Boltonian has turned his hand at stand-up comedy, acting, and singing too, to bring entertainment to his audiences. He has even briefly appeared on Strictly Come Dancing to wow the crowds.

Sadly, it hasn't been possible to see Kay live for a number of years now - he had to unexpectedly cancel his last comedy tour for family reasons.

He supports charitable causes, with The Lily Foundation close to his heart. The charity assists children who have mitochondrial disease.

Not to be deterred by his absence from the comedy scene of late, there are Peter Kay tribute acts that have been performed at casinos to entertain the punters there. Turns out you can never have enough Kay!

Caroline Aherne

Those who remember The Mrs Merton Show and The Royle Family will likely have Caroline Aherne near the top of their list of favourite comedy people.

The wittiness and caustic humour in the questioning that various celebrities were subjected to on The Mrs Merton Show is hard to forget. Asking the questions that other chat show hosts dared not ask was part of her charm. Taking a gamble on not offending anyone was surely part of her appeal.

Also a star of The Fast Show, sadly she passed away before her time in 2016.

Rowan Atkinson

Rowan Atkinson is perhaps the world's most famous British comedian, due to the ubiquity of his films.

Whilst famous in the UK for starring in the likes of Blackadder, he became a global star as Mr Bean. He even starred as the character in the opening of the London Olympics where he "participated" in playing a rendition of the Chariots of Fire theme tune celebrating British filmmaking - a broadcast watched by over 900 million people.

More recently, his series of Johnny English movies - an alternative take on the 007 spy thriller franchise - in which he stars as the bumbling agent of the title, has also been seen by audiences worldwide.
