Just another ageing wannabe comedy writer.
I live in [that renowned comedy epicentre] Espoo, Finland, but also lurk intermittently in southern Oxfordshire. I've tried my hand at most types of creative writing, including novels, short stories, plays etc, and failed at all of them. So now I'm focusing on trying to write sitcom scripts - just as difficult but more fun. When I'm not doing that (or working, or doing all the other real life stuff that middle-aged gits have to deal with), I sometimes sit in cafes. Eavesdropping.
Here's what I've come up with so far:
'The People's Act of Literature', a short play in which two blokes act out a play in a caff using pepperpots, was a finalist at the 2008 Windsor Fringe Drama Awards.
'Coffin Dodgers', a sitcom set in an old people's home, was performed by Real Deal Theatre at Westminster Reference Library in 2009.
'Anger Management for Dogs', a short play about two dogs who go down the pub to discuss their personal problems and the strange attraction of beanbags, was voted favourite script at the 2009 Pint-Sized Plays script slam and has been revived several times since then. 'Something off the Menu', a duologue involving a dithering café customer and an increasingly exasperated waiter, was staged by Write On at the ADC Theatre in Cambridge in 2010.
'Having it All', a sitcom about a power-crazed executive at an Oxfordshire builders' merchants, was highly commended / a runner-up in the 2013 Sitcom Mission.
'A Wrong Turn in the North', a film-based mash-up exploring what might happen if some comedy characters wandered into a classic horror film, is due to be staged by Real Deal Theatre at their next Popcorn Saturday. Apparently.
