The accidental Fringe career of Paul Vickers
Paul Vickers never planned to make his Edinburgh Festival Fringe act his main thing. As the former frontman of John Peel-championed band Dawn of the Replicants, turned collaborator with Edinburgh underground supergroup Paul Vickers and The Leg, his foray into off-kilter comic cabaret with his debut show, Twonkey's Cottage, in 2010 was meant to be a diversion from producing a Beefheartian stew of punk-folk clatter to accompany an increasingly fantastical series of narrative vignettes.

Georgia Snow, The Stage, 23rd August 2016Are You Being Served? preview
The new set is incredibly detailed and whilst recording in HD would mean it can't be the same set it has been superbly recreated, so a real credit to the team who put it all together. Which begs the question, was all this effort really just for a 30-minute episode? Or are they planning to bring it back as a series.
Elliot Gonzalez, I Talk Telly, 23rd August 2016Preview: Are You Being Served?
There's a real warmth to Are You Being Served?, made with love by a team who respect the original, and want to do it justice. It shows, and the studio audience lap it up.

Voice Magazine, 23rd August 2016I'm giving out awards for outstanding mediocrity
I'm celebrating not just the people who follow the rules, but the predatory agents and extortionate PR companies who have made comedy safe, both in the clubs and on the box, as well.

The Herald, 23rd August 2016Casting Call Woe: Audition nightmares relived
Casting Call Woe is a blog that gathers together some of the worst 'casting calls' to come out of the film and TV industries, as producers seek actors for upcoming projects. Some are funny, some are bizarre and some reveal the sexist thought processes that are too often employed by productions-in-development.
ThreeWeeks, 23rd August 2016Phil Jerrod: Hypocrite on the Fringe
Phil Jerrod is back at the Fringe with new show Hypocrite, in part inspired by him being mugged in a phone box. With hypocrisy the theme, he sounds like just the chap to give us some honest and consistent answers in an interview, so we threw some questions in his general direction.
Caro Moses, ThreeWeeks, 23rd August 2016Joe DeRosa: Moving forward at the Fringe
American stand-up Joe DeRosa keeps himself busy writing, performing, acting, podcasting and a whole lot more. Though you might recognise him from his recurring role in 'Better Call Saul'.
Caro Moses, ThreeWeeks, 23rd August 2016Gideon Irving: For iving rooms to the Fringe
Gideon Irving can usually be found performing his music in the living rooms of his audience. But occasionally the multi-instrumentalist and raconteur is persuaded into a more conventional performance space, which is good news for us here at the Fringe.
Caro Moses, ThreeWeeks, 23rd August 2016Phil Dunning: meet the People's Prince
You may have seen Phil Dunning performing at the Fringe before as one quarter of sketch group Oyster Eyes. This time he's taking to the stage alone, though as a plethora of different characters, a feat only possible thanks to an impressive array of wigs.
Caro Moses, ThreeWeeks, 23rd August 2016Mary Lynn Rajskub: 24 star Fringe
You may be more familiar with Mary Lynn Rajskub for her TV work, not least as Chloe from 24. But this August it's all about the comedy, as she imports her stand-up for the Edinburgh audience with a debut Fringe show 24 Hours With Mary Lynn Rajskub. We caught up with Mary Lynn to find out about the show, and how stand-up and acting compare.

Chris Mackrell, Black Diamond, 23rd August 2016We need 'low brow' comedy like Mrs Brown's Boys
I sat down to watch my first ever episode of Mrs Brown's Boys this week. I felt like I should - given that it has just been voted the best comedy of the 21st century by Radio Times readers, was I missing out on a cultural phenomenon? My first foray left me perplexed. Mrs Brown - spoiler alert - gets hypnotised, clucking like a chicken at random moments. The cast crack up and redo their lines - much to the live audience's delight. It felt more like panto than anything I'd ever watched on television.
