David Mitchell is compiling a new humorous book featuring material from his Observer newspaper column alongside new material.

The comedian is currently working on Thinking About It Only Makes It Worse And Other Lessons From Modern Life, with a plan to publish it this autumn.

The blurb for the book says: "Why is my jumper depreciating? Why are people so f***ing hung up about swearing? Why do the asterisks in that sentence make it okay? Why do so many people want to stop other people doing things, and how can they be stopped from stopping them? Why is every film and TV programme a sequel or a remake? Why are we so reliant on perpetual diversion that someone has created chocolate toothpaste? Is there anything to be done about the internet?"

Publishers Guardian Faber explain: "David Mitchell delights us with a tour of the absurdities of modern life - Ryanair to Downton Abbey, sports day to smoking, Poundland to phone etiquette, UKIP to hotdogs made of cats. Funny, provocative and shot through with refreshing amounts of common sense - drawn from Mitchell's Observer columns and including new material - Thinking About it Only Makes It Worse celebrates and commiserates on the state of things in our not entirely glorious nation."

David Mitchell says: "I am delighted to be working with Guardian Faber. Everyone I've met there seems nice which means that, statistically speaking, some of them probably are. Also we are agreed that the title I Don't Care What You Think Either was needlessly aggressive, yet somehow tempting. So I reckon I know where they're coming from. Although I don't know where they come from, and neither should I care in an egalitarian and nonjudgmental workplace."

Laura Hassan from the publishers adds: "We are pleased as punch to be publishing David Mitchell at Guardian Faber. The book will be filled with his trademark wit and wisdom. Are you alarmed by the rise of male grooming products? Do you sometimes suspect that the world would be a better place if whenever two people met they should both say sorry, just to clear the air? This is the book for you."

Thinking About It Only Makes It Worse And Other Lessons from Modern Life has been given a publishing date of 6th November 2014.

David Mitchell has worked on a number of books in the past. In 2009 he worked with his double-act partner to publish This Mitchell And Webb Book and in 2012 published his autobiography David Mitchell: Back Story
