The Inbetweeners Movie, the box office smash hit of the year, has continued its run of success with its DVD release, selling more than half a million copies on its first day alone.

The movie, which opened in cinemas across the country in mid-August, broke box office records and continued playing at some locations well into October. Now the DVD release, which was out on Monday, clocked up 575,104 sales on that day over its two versions: standard DVD and 'Triple Play' (DVD, Blu-ray and digital copy).

The second best selling DVD release of the week was Rise Of The Planet Of The Apes with a little over 100,000 units sold, and Super 8 third with less than 50,000.

Taking more than £20 million at the box office over its opening weekend alone, takings are now understood to be nearing £45 million.

Both the DVD and Triple Play releases of the film have hours of bonus material, including deleted scenes, commentaries with writers (Iain Morris & Damon Beesley) and the four stars, out-takes, a 'making of' feature, and behind the scenes footage.

The sales figures make The Inbetweeners Movie the fastest selling comedy film of 2011, and the second fastest selling film overall, just behind Harry Potter & The Deathly Hallows Part 2.

Head of 4DVD, the distributor responsible for the film's release, David Root said: "We are really blown away by this result. Back when the idea of this movie was conceived, we all hoped it would be a success but no one could have imagined success on this level. It's a true British success story, from the imagination of a pair of incredibly talented writers in Iain Morris and Damon Beesley and brought to life through some first-rate performances from all the actors but especially the four male leads.

"We were aware of the need to offer the fans something new with this release and ensured there was a host of additional material on the DVD and Triple Play release, from behind-the-scenes interviews on set to hilarious out-takes and deleted scenes - making sure this release is a fitting tribute to the excitement and energy of the film!"
