Friday Night Dinner is to return to Channel 4 for a fourth series.

The channel confirms: "Big Talk Productions and Popper Pictures have been commissioned to produce a fourth series of the critically-acclaimed and multi-award winning comedy Friday Night Dinner for Channel 4, with Tamsin Greig, Paul Ritter, Simon Bird and Tom Rosenthal returning as the Goodman Family, and Mark Heap once again arriving unannounced as Jim."

Series 4 will be written and produced again by creator Robert Popper. The six episode series will see Jonny getting serious with a 'female', Adam injuring Jonny after buttering the kitchen floor, Mum forced to pretend that her mother has died and Dad inviting over a friend who talks with his eyes closed. Also 'Horrible Grandma' will return for more horribleness, and a terrified Jim will be tasked with looking after five dogs.

Robert Popper jokingly writes: "I am verry hapy I am writin a new serries of Friday Niht Dinners for Chanel 4. I hop it wil be funy and that the peeples wil laurgh."

Channel 4 commissioner Nerys Evans says: "It's always a joy to welcome back the wonderfully doolally world of Friday Night Dinner, and Series 4 looks set to be a real corker."

Series 4 of Friday Night Dinner will be shown on Channel 4 in 2016.

Writing on his blog, Popper explained the delay as follows: "I know, 2016 is a long way off to wait - a mixture of the cast being so busy on other shows, because they're so good, and me having had some other writing commitments. So apologies again, but hope you'll all tune in for more japes next year."

Below is the trailer that was used to promote Series 3. Broadcast in June 2014, the six-part series launched with just under 1 million viewers.
