Up The Women has come to a close after two series, the BBC has confirmed.

Starring, created and co-written by Jessica Hynes, the 1910-set comedy tells the story of the Banbury Intricate Craft Circle Politely Request Women's Suffrage.

Comprised of an ineffectual but well-intentioned group of locals, the craft circle meet regularly in the local church hall, with almost all efforts to promote their cause thwarted by their own squabbling.

The sitcom also starred Rebecca Front, Vicki Pepperdine, Judy Parfitt, Georgia Groome, Emma Pierson, Ryan Sampson and Adrian Scarborough.

Up The Women was the final audience sitcom to be recorded at BBC Television Centre, early in 2013 before its closure for refurbishment. Its first series consisted of just three episodes, broadcast on BBC Four in May and June of that year.

A second series, running to six episodes, was broadcast by BBC Two in January and February 2015, as part of the broadcaster's Democracy season, marking 800 years since the original issuing of Magna Carta.

Confirming the sitcom's demise, a BBC spokesperson told RadioTimes.com today: "After two great series, sadly there won't be any more Up The Women on BBC Two as the channel looks to bring new comedy shows through. Huge thanks to the incredibly talented Jessica Hynes, and all involved in the making of the show."

The complete series collection is now available to own on DVD
