Highly-praised E4 comedy drama My Mad Fat Diary has been recommissioned, producers Tiger Aspect confirmed today.

The 1990s-set series is based on the real-life diary of Rae Earl, a teenager struggling to cope with all the usual coming-of-age woes, whilst battling depression.

Adapted by Tom Bidwell, two series have been broadcast to date, starring Sharon Rooney as Rae.

Rooney will return for Series 3, with the rest of the regular cast - including Ian Hart, Claire Rushbrook, Nico Mirallegro and Jodie Comer - also expected to reprise their roles.

The series is likely to be set in 1997, following Series 2, broadcast earlier this year, taking place during late Summer and early Autumn 1996.

The show takes "a funny and honest look at life from the perspective of Rae - a funny, music-mad teenager who, despite an eccentric mother and her own body image and mental health issues, has a huge lust for life, love and trying to get laid".

Further details about the new series have yet to be revealed.
