Channel 4 has ordered a full series of new sitcom Catastrophe.

The show focuses on "an Irish woman and an American man who make a bloody mess as they struggle to fall in love in London".

The comedy has been written by and stars Pulling and Dead Boss creator Sharon Horgan and American stand-up comedian and popular Twitter user Rob Delaney.

Catastrophe's commission follows a successful non-broadcast pilot, filmed earlier this year.

Phil Clarke, the head of comedy at Channel 4, says: "Sharon Horgan and Rob Delaney are two unique, and supremely talented comic writers and performers, and they have come together to make a notably outstanding pilot. The result is an original and joyous transatlantic romantic comedy, and I'm delighted that we are now going to series."

Catastrophe will be made by Avalon Television, the production company behind series including Man Down and Trying Again. Jon Thoday, the joint managing director of Avalon, said: "We are delighted to be producing another exciting new narrative project with Channel 4 and working with two brilliant original comic talents."

The new show will follow the single-camera format. A six-part series will be filmed this autumn, with Cardinal Burns and Cuckoo's Ben Taylor directing. Adam Tandy (The Thick Of It) will produce.

This will not be the first time Horgan and Delaney have worked together. In 2012 they starred in an online sketch for BBC Comedy called Kinky Sex. This video, with strong adult themes, can be viewed below:
