The BBC has ordered a second series of The Michael McIntyre Chat Show.

It has been confirmed via the stand-up comedian's social media profiles that he will return to BBC One to present another series of the comedy chat show later in 2014.

The renewal comes before the first series has even concluded, indicating the BBC is clearly happy and confident with the format.

The show has performed well in its Monday night slot. The opening episode in March picked up consolidated ratings of 3.9 million (which includes repeat data), whilst the overnight ratings for subsequent episodes (which does not include repeat data) have recorded around 2 million viewers - up on the average for the slot. Last Monday's figure of 2.2 million suggests viewership for the programme is still rising too.

Mark Linsey, BBC Controller of Entertainment Commissioning, told British Comedy Guide recently: "We're delighted that The Michael McIntyre Chat Show has made such a fantastic start with live +7 figures of 3.9m. For a brand new show to be enjoyed by so many viewers is testament to Michael's huge appeal and fun approach to the chat show genre."

Michael McIntyre has 2.9m fans on Facebook. A post on his profile this afternoon says: "The Michael McIntyre Chat Show to return later in the year. Hilarious last show on Monday night with James Corden, Alex Jones and Sir Bruce Forsyth."

Facebook comments from fans include "I liked his chat show style so glad it was different to Ross and Norton - glad to hear it will be back. Well done Michael!!" and "Can't wait for the show to come back. I'm glad it wasn't cancelled after the first series." Not all the posts were universally positive though. One viewer posted: "Love Michael but he did seem out of his comfort zone at times."

The final episode of Series 1 will be shown this Monday, 14th April, on BBC One at 10:35pm.
