Last Night's Viewing: The Work Experience

The sitcom element of The Work Experience has to be very funny indeed to have any chance of outweighing the odiousness of the concept. Hilarious? Actually, Channel 4's "straight" documentary series The Model Agency was far funnier than this.

Producer: We're not evil... everyone had a great time

It hurts me to see this E4 show besmirched by so many of my beloved lefty papers as a cheap reality TV format specifically manufactured to humiliate desperate young job seekers in an employment market so woefully set against them.

Review: The Work Experience

In theory, there's a lot of humour in ignorance; based upon the very simple idea that when people are ignorant, you laugh at them. Except when that behaviour is so consciously ignorant that it becomes intolerable.

The Work Experience exploits interns' real desperation

The E4 show's humiliation of people chasing job 'opportunities' at whatever cost isn't funny in this climate - it's cheap.

Ben Lyons, The Guardian, 25th October 2012

Mobo Award-winning grime rapper Lethal Bizzle puts in a cameo appearance in this new sitcom where the 'sit' lies in the chaos of a new fashion PR company and the 'com' lies in the fact everybody knows they're in a scripted TV show - except for two interns/victims each week. The artfully orchestrated set-ups within scripted storylines make for comedy of the toe-curling kind. With Kate Miles and Diane Morgan.
