On High Street UK the priority is to 'shift units, make money, smash targets...' and no one knows that better than the staff of PhoneShop. New recruit Christopher is on the infamous one day trial, but will he make his first sale by 6pm and secure the job, or will he be yet another victim of the vicious 'retail battlefield'?
PhoneShop centres on the everyday lives of the employees of the mobile phone shop, the like of which you can find in every high street and shopping mall across the country. In this pilot episode, Christopher, the 'new man', is charged with replacing super salesman 'Little' Gary Patel (who has been arrested (again) for attacking the lads from Top Shop). Christopher, a graduate, needs to quickly adapt to this new world where street smart is the order of the day and degrees count for nothing. Will he survive the dreaded one-day trial? And if he does will he fit in with the rest of the team?
Our Review: The pilot of this episode was so highly regarded internally within Channel 4 that they ordered a full six-part series of the show before the pilot had even aired.
Anyone who has worked in a phone shop will certainly identify with this comedy - the writers have clearly done their research on clueless customers and the tricks that sales people will use to get them to upgrade.
Actor Tom Bennett does a great job of playing new guy Christopher, but sometimes his mannerisms are so similar to those of Ricky Gervais that it is distracting - take this clip for example - very David Brent indeed!
There's certainly potential in this show - particularly the banter between the two experienced male shop assistants (Ashley and Jerwayne), but whether they are likeable characters is hard to say, and whether PhoneShop will be a hit with audiences when it goes to a full series of E4 is definitely still up in the air.
