Vince and Penny are on nightmare dates in the same pub but are unaware of each other until their paths meet at the cigarette machine. It's been 5 years and 3 months since they were last in touch - the day he jilted her at the altar. They decide to catch up over a meal but the atmosphere is frosty.

At their last meeting Vince arranged to meet Penny at the Red Lion pub - but which one? He manages to track her down at her home on the pretext of returning a handkerchief. He has a shock in store when her mother, Daphne, makes an appearance and he gets another grilling about the wedding.

Penny and Vince meet for a walk where they agree to continue being friends and she is even persuaded to have dinner at his flat. But can they spend an evening together without rekindling the past?

It's Penny's birthday and her parents have planned a big surprise, but she has a bigger surprise for them. She has decided to move in with Vince: the first major snag to their plan is finding a new flat to inhabit as Big Ed wants his back!

At long last, Penny moves into the new flat with Vince. Their new life seems idyllic until she goes out one morning and forgets to lock the front door. Their happy home is burgled and the couple are back to square one...

Vince and Penny are separated again after rowing in a restaurant about the sale of their vandalised flat. An extremely drunk Vince plucks up Dutch courage to visit the Warrender home in an attempt at reconciliation but the police are called.

Relations between the warring couple are fairly peaceful, except that Penny thinks Vince is taking her for granted. She reckons he needs to be taught a lesson, so she invents an very good-looking and very imaginary colleague called Steve to make him jealous!

Penny has an uncomfortable dinner with her estranged husband, Graham, where she is told that he is citing her for adultery in the divorce - and he has the pictures to prove it. She is amazed when Vince plays the 'knight in shining armour' and rescues her!

Daphne has the dubious pleasure of a flying visit from the Pinners who happen to be just passing. Meanwhile, Penny and Vince attend a wedding reception where further misunderstandings occur involving Vince and the bride!

Vince asks Penny to come over to his flat to her some news - she decides to split up with him, again - but he tells her that he has met someone else and become engaged However, he persuades her to go on a 'goodbye' holiday to his parents villa in Portugal.

Penny pays a visit to the doctors believing that she may be pregnant. After getting over the initial shock, Vince is more supportive than usual and he discusses it with his father when he and Penny visit his parents for dinner.

Penny's divorce finally comes through and during a lunch to celebrate she jokingly asks Vince to propose to her. He obliges but emphasises that he is serious and Penny is taken aback by his sincerity. She contemplates a future with Vince once again and comes to a momentuous decision ...

When it becomes clear that Gina is behind Penny's enforced move to the Paris office, Vince invites Penny for a visit to the Pinner's villa in Portugal. It could be a while before they see each other again and at least this way they can be alone ... or so they think!

It's been six months since Vince and Penny's last meeting and their return engagement in a wine bar is witnessed by a dumbstruck Daphne. Gina is playing the wounded wife in front of Vince's parents and manipulating information to give to her solicitor for the divorce settlement. Meanwhile, Vince offers Penny's dad, Norman, a job in his new wine importing company.

It's the day of the divorce and Gina is about to acquire most of her husband's businesses. Vince also has problems with his scrap metal firm when he learns that the United Nations are to investigate the sale of 6, supposedly scrap, German tanks to Luanda. The day can only get better, surely?

Gina, now owner of her ex-husband's wine importing company, is withholding agreement to sign a contract with the Pinners unless Vince and Penny cancel their plans to marry. She also withdraws the offer of a job to Norman but enlists Daphne's help in her sabotage. Penny and Vince make a final effort to resolve their problems before they are destined to live apart forever. They have a surprise in store for everybody!
