Character guide

Robin Lightfoot

Architect; Greeting card message writer.   Played by: Hugh Bonneville

In his home world (our world) Robin Lightfoot was a confirmed bachelor working as an architect. All of a sudden, he finds himself married and with two children, and his career is now writing messages for greeting cards.

After eventually coming to terms with the fact that what he is experiencing is not a practical joke, Robin tries to settle down in his new life. There are some big problems for him though. For example, the version of Robin in this new world is vile man; who is a cad, a womanizer, a swindler and possibly even a murderer... and he wants to return to his universe.

Leslie Lightfoot

Housewife; Artist.   Played by: Josie Lawrence

Leslie Lightfoot is the unhappy wife that Robin never married. She is none the wiser that her version of Robin and this new Robin are two totally different people. As the series progresses, the marriage breaks down and they divorce.

In the second series Leslie attempts to set up a refuge for battered wifes, which fails. By the end of the second series when the universes collide, Leslie transforms into the version from Robin's universe, who a a successful artist who wants nothing to do with him.

Dirk

Architect; Greeting card message writer.   Played by: Stephen Frost

Dirk is Robin's business partner in both universes - all be it that they are two entirely different forms of business. In Robin's real world it is Dirk who is happily married man and with two children, but in this parallel world he is single, a drug user and a sex addict.

Ned Lightfoot

Played by: Sam Bradley

Ned is the youngest of Robin's "children". He is also the only person to believe that Robin comes from a different world, mainly because he spends his time reading comic books set in such places.

Maxine Lightfoot

Played by: Ann Gosling

Maxine is the older of the two children that Robin supposedly has. Unlike Ned, she doesn't believe that Robin is the same man he always was. This does not stop Maxine being at the centre of all the mess Robin causes... this include, amongst other things, her giving birth to Arthur Smith's children.

Arthur Smith

Comedian; Children's entertainer.   Played by: Arthur Smith

While the Arthur Smith from our world is a successful stand-up comedian, the Arthur Smith from this new world is a humble children's entertainer. It is believed that the reason for this slightly odd career for Smith is that Margaret Thatcher died in 1978 in this alternative world, as a result the alternative comedy movement never began. Robin decides to try and make the new Arthur a successful comedian as well.

Julia (Series 1)

AKA: Julia Lightfoot.  Played by: Barbara Murray

Julia Lightfoot is Robin's mother. In Robin's own dimension, she has been married for 50 years and is a strict, gun-toting conservative. In the new dimension, Julia is free-loving liberal who has had several relationship and many more children. As a result, Robin now has two stepbrothers, both called Ian.

Murdo (Series 1-2)

Played by: Lewis Macleod

Murdo becomes Leslie's new boyfriend after she divorces Robin at the end of series one. He is a man of strong political convictions, believing in amongst other things the growth of GM crops for environmental and health reasons. He is also very keen on puffins. In the middle of series two, Murdo is killed, probably by the other Robin.

Alan (Series 3)

AKA: Alana.  Played by: Christopher Kelham

Before the universes collided at the end of series two, Alana was Maxine's best friend. However, after the collision Alana had a change of gender and became Alan. While Alan still tries to be friends with Maxine, Maxine is uncomfortable because she feels that Alan may have a more romantic relationship in mind.
