Perhaps one that outstayed its welcome? Was quite good, but something about it which just didn't "do it" for me, if that makes sense.

I was probably only eight back then. When was it on??
My critical faculties were already flawless though, naturally.

Same here. All I remember is the theme toon ("Because of you, these things I do...") and the opening credits in which Jacko kissed a lot of birds. Great days...Alas, I think if you watched it now you would remember that it was crap.

Ah yes...the theme toon by Dexy's Midnight Runners. As I recall, they released it as a single to cash in on the success of Brush Strokes. I was in my early teens when Brush Strokes was on BBC1. It wasn't very funny, although I did like the fat bloke who ran the pub (Elmo?) and had a thing for the posh sort who Jacko was always trying to pull.

He was much better in Maid Marian and Her Merry Men though. ;)

I forgot about that. He also made a brief appearance in Kevin Costner's Robin Hood movie. Seem to remember that there were numerous jokey references to this in Maid Marian and Her Merry Men.

I saw him in something else recently as well. Can't for the life of me think what though. Don't suppose anyone else spotted him somewhere and can remember where...?

I think the first two series were good but after that they were all badly written and generally unwatchable, despite the talented Gary Waldhorn's involvement.

Just read they made a spinoff pilot called Elmo Putney PI, but it flopped so a full series was never made.

Series 1 and 2 are out again to mark the show's 25th anniversary.
