The Kevin Bishop Show - Series 1

On Thursday 24th July 2008 GMT at 7:53 PM GMT, Mark said:

This starts tomorrow tonight (Friday, 10pm, C4). It's worth checking out - there's a couple of duds, but with such a refreshingly fast pace (three or four sketches a minute) they're quickly swept aside by a larger quantity of quality sketches. Watch out for the age of consent rap, Stephen Hawking's new wheels and Simon Cowell's brother Brian.

See our guide for more info, a trailer and an exclusive interview with Kevin Bishop.

It won't please all, and won't even be slightly relevant in a couple of years - as he himself admitted - but it's not a bad show at all. I've seen the first episode, and am looking forward to checking out the rest.

It's surprisingly original! I didn't catch the pilot, but the first episode already has me laughing! The Tim Westwood and Stephen Hawking sketch really made me laugh! It has new ideas for what is a linear genre in comedy.
It has high potential to do well!

Really enjoyed it; had me laughing like a fool several times; much, much more then any recent sketch show. I especially liked the bit with actors auditioning, like Al Pacino doing Superman. Will be interesting to see if the quality keeps up, as a lot of sketch shows tend to nose dive after an episode or two; I hope it does becuase the pilot and this first episode have both been great.

This guy doesn't do ONE convincing mimic...that wouldnt be so bad if the content of the mimic sketch was any good but sadly it isn't. I understand he's getting married today, good luck to him I hope his Mrs is earning a decent living because he doesnt appear to have much of one.

I can't believe that CH4 comissioned a whole series of this expensive rubbish when there are so many great truely funny people on the London comedy scene who blow this spoled bratt out of the water in the first 5 seconds of thier act.

So you liked it the-oh. Twas pretty good though I thought. Nicely reserved first post Gary! As for the mimic thing, I don't think he's trying to be Rory Bremner or anything, it's just supposed to be broad takes on them, not on the nose impersonations. I can understand why a brash show like this would turn many off though; but I liked it.

Agree with the one-poster about Kevin mimicry at times though; some of his impressions are rubbish, but it kind of adds to the laughs tbh!

A title? Really, after having typed up dozens of sitcom episode details over the past few months, the last thing you should worry about is titles. They're always ripping things off.

On the subject of episode titles, didm't Jerry Seinfeld and Larry David make it a rule on Seinfeld that all the episode titles would be very simple, like The Comeback etc, to stop writers wasting time trying to think up witty titles.

Yeah, I think I remember hearing that. I wouldn't fancy having to come up with titles for 24 episodes but I can manage 6 at a time.

There's a show called "Switch" from 1997, that is pretty much identical to the Kevin Bishop Show (from what I've seen on youtube), and "Kalkofes Mattscheibe", which started in 1994 and is now in its 8th series.

My favourite show is unscripted, so I guess that wouldn't be the ideal format for a comedy writer to cop.. pick up.

There was a very good comedy drama two years ago about a hippie psychologist mother of two teenage children who moves in with a Turkish-German police officer who himself has a chav but handsome son and a radical muslim daughter. It's called Türkisch für Anfänger (Turkish for Beginners).

I've found a version with English subtitles:

It's like a bonus card that children can buy for the summer holiday in order to get discounts on all sorts of things (the zoo, cinema, outdoor and sports stuff) and to go to special events.

Kevin Bishop: I can only watch it on YouTube and it seems as if a large chunk of its appeal comes from the fast pace and from the arrangement of the sketches in the line-up. I didn't find them that funny, when watching them separately.

Also (and I'm not even remotely racist) the bit where it showed a picture of a black man accompanied by text saying "Coming up next.......Black Adder" had me in stitches.

I think, despite a few duds, the delivery and timing of some of the lines in Kevin Bishop's sketches are excellent. Am liking the show so far, definitely. Walken's Crisps and the Brucie Die Hard sketches in the earlier episode were both mint too.

Wit perhaps isn't everything BUT we are discussing a 'comedy' show .. jeez this show was rubbish! the bit about the moustaches?????

Lame is not funny and should not have a prime slot on a Friday night - end of. Is lame humour acceptable, or do we want something to laugh at? fools :P

Any old rubbish coz there'll always be people who'll like it?

I was a fan of this show but the last two episodes have been very poor in my opinion. The David Starky clips were just pointless after the first one.

There were some really lazy jokes 'Doherty - addiction', original? No. And the Bill Oddie - Tit one was so obvious.

The 'topped himself' sketch made me laugh but not a lot else. I think episode two had me in tears, in comparison.

Kevin Bishop is a fantastic performer, just needs better or more consistent material.
