Genius (Radio 4) Page 2

OK then zooo. The idea was to a way of improving Genius itself.

For those who don't listen to the show, two final ideas make it into the final round, and the audience choose their favourite by applauding. Gorman normally says, "All those in favour of Idea A." At which point the audience claps if they want that idea to win. Then Gorman says, "And all those in favour of Idea B." Then those who want the idea to win clap for that one.

However, this Genius noticed that most of the time, it is Idea B that wins. And this Genius claims that it is because that when they hear the applause for Idea A, those supporting Idea B know how much loader they have to clap in order to beat Idea A, thus making it biased. She therefore claimed that the way that the Top Genius is chosen should be changed. Gorman, was upset by the fact that someone should have the nerve to change the way the show works.

However, Gorman did show some research. It appears that out of all the recordings that they have done, include the recordings yet to be broadcast, 75% of the winning ideas were Idea B, although Gorman claimed that this statisitic is not significant. In the first series, 100% of the winning ideas were Idea B.

Ithink the idea of these shows is for entertainment. Does it matter who wins or loses? The same goes for HIGNFY or Buzzcocks.

Breaking news: an idea from Genius has come true! One of the winning ideas from the series was Tetris: The Movie, and now (8 years later) somebody is making it.
